While the film community gave her an Oscar for her performance, the viewing audience was sharply divided over her position on the Viet Nam war. The better part of the country also had a lot of trouble wrapping their heads around a sympathetic portrayal of a prostitute. Klute falls into the pantheon of highly influential films that were box office duds.
